How will TIES be realised?
The project's centrepiece is a survey of approximately 10.000 respondents. Since immigration is primarily an urban phenomenon, the project will be carried out in fifteen cities in eight countries. These cities are: Paris and Strasburg in France, Berlin and Frankfurt in Germany, Madrid and Barcelona in Spain, Vienna and Linz in Austria, Amsterdam and Rotterdam in the Netherlands, Brussels and Antwerp in Belgium, Zurich and Basle in Switzerland, and Stockholm in Sweden. We have chosen to look at cities because second-generations are concentrated especially in the major urban areas. Moreover, many integration policies are developed on the local level, and even cities in the same country often differ a lot in this regard.

In almost all cities, the focus will be on two second-generation groups and a control group whose parents were both born in the survey country. The two second-generation groups are from Turkish and Moroccan origin in the Netherlands and Belgium, and from Turkish and ex-Yugoslavian origin in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In Sweden and France the focus will only be on the Turkish second generation. Due to the more recent influx of labour migrants, the Spanish project addresses only second generation Moroccans and the control group. The interviewees are between 18 and 35 years old.

The following table shows the target numbers for the investigated groups in each city:

About thirty researchers at senior and junior levels will work on this project in the coming years. Most of the Ph.D. and Post-Doctoral students are employed through the EU funded TIES Research and Training Network (Marie Curie Fellowship Programme). They work with the international data set and realise complementary qualitative research.
